London Digest
Publications > London Digest:
The London Digest is designed specifically for practitioners, to bring together, in an accessible way, findings from recent and current research on key issues relating to educational practice in the city.
"There's no place like London. The city has no boundaries, it is infinite. I can feel free and safe. For studying, it is the only place in the world that had my specific course. Perfect, even if it is too cold and too far from home" (Juan Fortis, Creative advertising strategy student from El Salvador, in Study London, www.studylondon.ac.uk
This personal reflection is an inspiring introduction to the focus of this issue: Global Cities. LERU engagement with the global cities agenda comes with the aim of deepening our nderstanding of key London issues by gaining insights into other centres that have transcended nation-state boundaries and gained the status of global mega cities - New York, Paris, Tokyo, Beijing, Toronto, Los Angeles, Chicago and Sydney - and an emerging one, Lisbon. |

- Issue 5 of London Digest, Spring 2009: Workforce: London School Workforce (PDF Format: Size: 4.49Mb)
This is the first issue which is entirely based on studies conducted by the IOE staff often in partnerships or commissioned by partners such as TDA. This is of course no coincidence, but a testimony to the IOE’s core activities: teacher training and provision of professional and academic development routes for current and future professionals in education. It also resonates with the recently announced outcomes of the UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE):
‘The results show that the IOE has more than twice as many world-leading scholars in education than any other UK university and over one-third of its 200+ researchers are at the global cutting edge. More IOE research staff submitted their work to the RAE than researchers in any other university department in the field (218 full-time equivalent staff).’
The studies reviewed in this issue provide an insight into the richness of IOE research activities underpinning the development of new courses, new types of professional development, development of new ideas and concepts of school leadership and national strategies.
