In recognition of 2008 as the United Nations’ International Year of Languages, the "Living Language" Exhibition celebrates linguistic diversity and encourages visitors to explore both their own languages and those of others. Whilst internationally English is fast becoming the ‘global language’, in London over 350 languages are spoken, making it the most multilingual city in the world.

It will be housed in the entrance floor of the new East Thames Headquarters on West Ham Lane in Stratford, Newham. East Thames is a large Registered Social Landlord in East London, and as such, they are keen to programme exhibitions that reflect the diversity of the communities in which they work.

Drawing on written, oral and visual expressions of language, this exhibition combines textual and sonic materials with artists’ works inspired by language in some form or another - calligraphy, cultural identity through language, communication and the role of language in it. Visitors will be invited to contribute, and record their own languages as part of this exhibition. For further information please email: nathalie@addwater.co.uk
