London has the highest unauthorised absence of any major conurbation in England. Absence is one of 10 Key Issues identified by London Challenge as affecting education in the capital, and the focus of increased targeted action by DCSF. Whilst the majority of pupils are absent infrequently, a small group misses a proportion of school sufficient to impact on outcomes. LERU’s analysis looks at rates of absence in London and the relationship between absence and attainment.
