Welcome to the website of the London Education Research Unit.
I am delighted to have been appointed as LERU’s new Director. LERU is an invaluable education resource for London – for its educators; its researchers; and its policy-makers. Do use its resources. Tell us about your research and best practice, and help us make sense of the thorny issues.
London is a diverse global city. Over 300 languages are spoken in its thirty-two boroughs. And the notion of what it means to be a Londoner is being reinvented on a daily basis.
London is my second city, my adopted city, as it is for many people today. I arrived here by way of Manchester, Birmingham and Eritrea. I’ve lived and worked in London for some thirty years, as a teacher in inner city schools, as a local authority chief officer, as a member of the Inner London Education Authority, as a parent and school governor, and as an academic.
The questions that particularly interest me are:
· What kinds of leaders and leadership do we need for our global cities?
· How can schools and communities work together to the benefit of young people?
· What can we learn from young people in London about their lives and experiences, in ways that make schools even better?
Visit our events pages to read about our next London seminar and my recent Professorial Lecture.
Very best wishes
Kathryn
